Dr. Yan Liu is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director at Michigan State University's Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. She holds dual PhDs in Biological Systems Engineering (Washington State University) and Food Science (Ocean University of China), complemented by MS and BS degrees in Food Science/Food Engineering from Chinese institutions.
Her research focuses on sustainable bioconversion technologies, including:
- Biological valorization of agricultural residues into bioenergy/bioproducts
- High-density microbial fermentation systems
- Algal and fungal cultivation for biofuels and pharmaceuticals
- Animal waste conversion technologies
- Strain development and bioprocess optimization
Recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on waste-to-energy solutions (particularly anaerobic digestion enhancement), microalgal biorefining, and advanced soil analysis techniques. Her work frequently employs mechanochemical pretreatment methods and microbial community analysis.
Dr. Liu leads the Liu Research Group and has secured multiple grants, including recent funding from USDA-NRCS and Michigan Soybean Committee for projects on manure pretreatment and probiotic feed production. She maintains affiliations with MSU AgBioResearch and the Water Alliance.
