معرفی
Dr. Wei Liao is a Professor in the Department of Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering at Michigan State University and serves as the director of the MSU Anaerobic Digestion Research and Education Center (ADREC). His work focuses on transforming organic waste into renewable energy and sustainable solutions, with significant contributions to anaerobic digestion technology and wastewater treatment.
Dr. Liao's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Biological Systems Engineering from Washington State University (2005)
- M.S. in Biotechnology from Wuxi University of Light Industry, China (1996)
- B.S. in Fermentation Engineering & Technology from Wuxi University of Light Industry, China (1994)
His primary research interests center on anaerobic digestion for biogas production, particularly from agricultural and food waste streams. He investigates pretreatment methods (like ball milling and ultrasound) to enhance digestion efficiency, and develops sustainable wastewater treatment systems. His work bridges agricultural engineering, environmental science, and renewable energy, aiming to create circular economies for waste management.
Dr. Liao's recent publications and projects reveal a strong trend toward integrating machine learning for real-time control in anaerobic digestion, scaling up technologies for decentralized applications, and addressing challenges in small-scale livestock operations. His research spans environmental engineering, agricultural systems, and bioenergy, with a focus on practical, scalable solutions for waste-to-energy conversion.
His notable award is the CANR Camden Endowed Teaching Award (2020).
Dr. Liao currently leads several research grants, such as:
- Ultrasound assisted pre-treatment of wastewater from beverage businesses (2026)
- Real-Time Decision Making for Anaerobic Digestion of Food Wastes Using Machine Learning Approach (2025)
- A robust, energy-positive wastewater treatment system for forward operating bases (2025)
- Effects of the PLAZER RF pretreatment technology on anaerobic digestion of dairy manure (2025)
- Strategies to improve anaerobic digestion for small to medium-sized livestock operations (2025)
- A mobile agricultural wastes utilization system for small-scale renewable electricity generation (2023)
As director of ADREC, Dr. Liao leads a multidisciplinary team focused on advancing anaerobic digestion research and education. He collaborates with industry partners, government agencies (including the U.S. Army and USDA), and international institutions (such as Nanjing Agricultural University) to develop next-generation waste-to-energy technologies and promote sustainable climate solutions.
