Prof. Dr. Yalçın Kaya is Professor and Head of the Genetics and Bioengineering Department at Trakya University's Faculty of Engineering. He holds a PhD in Sunflower Breeding and Genetics from Trakya University and completed postdoctoral research at USDA Sunflower Research Unit.
Research focuses on developing resilient crops through advanced breeding techniques, with emphasis on sunflower hybrids resistant to drought, diseases (broomrape, downy mildew), and herbicides. Leadership includes directing the Plant Breeding Application and Research Center and founding Tragen R&D Company that developed multiple registered varieties.
International roles: President of World Sunflower Association (2012-2016), FAO European Sunflower Coordinator, and Chairman of Balkan Seed Growers Association. Recognized with the Pustovoit Award (sunflower Nobel) and honorary doctorate for contributions to agricultural science.
