- Institution: University of Bergen
- School: Faculty of Psychology
- Department: Department of Pedagogy
- Role: Associate Professor, Vice Dean for Education
Her research interests include critical pedagogy, race and whiteness in education, microaggressions, sustainability education, and democratic learning. She explores how power, privilege, and identity shape classroom dynamics in Norway’s ostensibly colorblind educational context. Her work emphasizes transformative teaching practices and institutional change.
The recent publications reveal a strong thematic focus on racial discourse in Norwegian universities, sustainability education initiatives, and assessment reform. Her scholarship bridges theory and practice, often employing interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches. She investigates how race is discussed (or avoided) in classrooms, promotes faculty development through theater-based methods, and supports systemic sustainability integration across disciplines.
Yael Harlap has been involved in funded projects such as bioCEED, supported by NOKUT, focusing on quality assessment in higher education. She co-founded the Sustainability Education Collective at the University of Bergen to foster cross-faculty collaboration on SDG-aligned teaching. Her leadership extends to organizing public academic events and interviews with prominent scholars on race and democracy.
She is a key member of several research groups, including:
- Differences and Power in Education (FoMU)
- Knowledge, Education and Democracy
- Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (TeLEd)
