Ya-Wen Lei is a Professor of Sociology at Harvard University, affiliated with the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, and the Asia Center. She holds a LLM and JSD from Yale Law School and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on political sociology, law and society, economic sociology, and Chinese studies, emphasizing qualitative and comparative methods. She has authored two major books: The Contentious Public Sphere (2018) and The Gilded Cage (2023), exploring topics like authoritarian governance, techno-state capitalism, and labor dynamics.
