Prof. YASEMİN AKKOYUNLU is a Professor of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul, Turkey. With over two decades of experience in the field, she has established herself as a leading expert in infectious diseases, particularly focusing on tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and emerging infectious diseases including COVID-19. Her research has contributed significantly to understanding infection control, antimicrobial resistance, and clinical management of complex infectious conditions.
Education:
- Expertise in Medicine (Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology), Bülent Ecevit University, 2002-2008
- Doctorate in Medicine, Dokuz Eylul University, 1995-2001
Prof. Akkoyunlu's research spans multiple areas within infectious diseases, with particular emphasis on tuberculosis (including extrapulmonary forms), HIV/AIDS management, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging infectious diseases. She has conducted extensive research on infection control in intensive care units, particularly in resource-limited settings. Her recent work has focused on the neurological complications of COVID-19, vaccine response in immunocompromised patients, and the long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection. She is actively involved in international research collaborations through the Infectious Diseases - International Research Initiative (ID-IRI).
Prof. Akkoyunlu's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the intersection of infectious diseases with other medical specialties. Her work spans neurology (studying brain changes after COVID-19), critical care (managing infections in ICU settings), hepatology (hepatitis B treatment), and endocrinology (thyroid complications in COVID-19). She has made significant contributions to understanding tuberculosis, particularly extrapulmonary forms, and has published extensively on infection control practices in intensive care units globally. Her research often involves international collaborations, reflecting her active participation in global infectious disease research networks.
Research Projects:
- Kandidemi gelişen hastaların erken tanısında 1,3-beta D-glukan, mannan antijeni ve antimannan IgG antikorunun yeri (2024-2025)
