Y. Connie Yuan is a Professor in the Department of Communication and Department of Global Development at Cornell University, part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Her research focuses on organizational communication, intercultural communication, and knowledge management, with particular emphasis on cross-cultural differences in cognition, decision-making, and technology usage. She has received notable awards including the 2020 Outstanding Service Award and the 2019 Kathy Berggren Diversity and Inclusion Award.
Education: Ph.D. in Communication (2004), University of Southern California; M.A. in Communication (2001), University of Southern California; M.A. in Marketing Communication (1998), University of Connecticut; B.A. in English Literature and Law (1995), Peking University.
Research interests include climate change communication, health information behavior, and intercultural collaboration effectiveness. Her work explores cultural variations in how individuals perceive risks (e.g., climate change) and seek health information, as well as the role of communication technology in knowledge transfer. She has led or co-led multiple grants, including a NSF-funded project on knowledge retention in transactive memory systems (2008–2012) and studies on cross-cultural expertise recognition.
Publications span journals like Journal of Communication, Management Communication Quarterly, and Communication Research, with recent focus on social media’s impact on information sharing, attribution patterns in cross-cultural contexts, and communal risk communication strategies.
Grants include $445,169 from NSF for knowledge retention research and $1.48 million for the YardMap Network initiative. She has advised numerous collaborative projects, emphasizing intercultural dynamics and technology-mediated communication.
