Xunchang Cheng is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Book Cultures and Publishing (CBCP) at the University of Reading. His research focuses on the evolution of Chinese typeforms up to the 20th century, combining material analysis of historical Chinese metal types with practical applications in typography. He is affiliated with the University of Reading's collections, where he examines the origins and significance of these types through comparative studies of printed materials and physical type specimens. Beyond academia, he works as a multilingual typeface designer, documentary director, and exhibitions curator, bridging historical research with contemporary design practices.
His current project involves establishing a testing process to facilitate the application of historical Chinese metal types in modern typography, emphasizing both scholarly and practical outcomes.
