Dr. Xinxin Sun is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Education at Tufts University School of Medicine. She holds dual qualifications with an MD from Shandong University and a PhD in Genetics from Tufts University, focusing on gene transcription regulation in neuronal development. Dr. Sun teaches Anatomy, Histology, Genetics, and Physiology to medical, dental, MBS, and PA students while serving as course director for Medical Histology and Endocrine and Reproduction courses.
- Doctor of Philosophy in Genetics, Tufts University (2013)
- Master of Science in Medicine, Shandong University (2005)
- Doctor of Medicine, Shandong University (2002)
Her research investigates transcriptional mechanisms in neuronal development, particularly through Sp4 regulation of neurotrophin-3 and NMDAR1. Recent work focuses on teaching pedagogy innovations to enhance medical education effectiveness. Publications span Developmental Neurobiology, Journal of Neurochemistry, and Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience.
Key article trends: 1) Sp4 transcription factor dynamics in neuronal development (2009-2015), 2) NMDA receptor signaling interactions, and 3) neurotrophin regulation of dendritic morphology. Her work bridges molecular neuroscience with clinical education applications.
- Dean’s Award for Excellence in Basic Science Teaching (2021)
- Citation for Excellence in Teaching (2020)
- Faculty Recognition for Outstanding Achievement (2018-2019)
- Social-Emotional Learning, Civic Engagement, Diversity & Inclusion (SEL-CE-D&I) program participant (2018-2019)
- American Associate of Anatomists membership (2017)
Dr. Sun mentors MBS and dental students while actively contributing to curriculum development through roles in the BaSiCSsss Committee and course directorships. She has taught continuously since 2013 across Tufts University's medical, dental, and MBS programs.
