Dr. Xin-Lin Gao is a tenured full professor of mechanical engineering at Southern Methodist University (SMU), affiliated with the Lyle School of Engineering. He has held faculty positions at the University of Texas-Dallas, Texas A&M University, and Michigan Technological University. His expertise spans solid mechanics, multiscale modeling, metamaterials, and biomechanics. He has authored over 160 journal papers, 3 book chapters, and serves as an associate editor for multiple journals, including Mechanics of Materials and CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences.
Dr. Gao's research focuses on advanced materials and structures, including micro- and nano-mechanics, additive manufacturing, and impact mechanics. He has pioneered work on metamaterials with unique properties like negative Poisson’s ratios and customizable thermal responses. His contributions also extend to computational models for traumatic brain injury and helmet design.
- Education: Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering (with a minor in Mathematics), University of Wisconsin-Madison (1998)
- Editorial Roles: Associate editor for 3+ journals, editorial board member for 7+ journals
His professional service includes leadership roles in ASME, such as Chair of the Aerospace Division and Structures & Materials Technical Committee. He has received the Gerald J. Ford Research Fellowship (2021) and was elected an ASME Fellow (2010).
Dr. Gao’s work integrates theoretical, computational, and experimental methods to address challenges in materials science, structural engineering, and biomedical applications.
