Professor Xin Conan-Wu is a faculty member in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the College of William & Mary. Her research bridges art history with contemporary environmental and cultural inquiries, focusing on the representation of nature across East and West. She holds advanced degrees from institutions in the UK, Canada, and China, and has authored influential works such as Lure of the Supreme Joy (2024), which explores Neo-Confucian academies, and Patricia Johanson and the Re-Invention of Public Environmental Art (2017). Her scholarship connects historical studies with modern environmental concerns, reflected in edited volumes like The Realm of Mountain-and-Water (2015).
Professor Wu’s teaching spans Chinese Art & Archaeology, Japanese Art, Modern & Contemporary Chinese Art, and Buddhist Art & Architecture. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating visual arts, garden design, and environmental philosophy. Her awards include grants from the National Gallery, Library of Congress, and Graham Foundation. Courses taught include 'Nature & Its Representations' and 'Encounters: East-West,' reflecting her commitment to global perspectives.
Her research highlights the intersection of environment and education in East Asian traditions, as seen in her work on Zhu Xi’s academies. She advocates for dialogue between historical practices and contemporary design, evident in collaborations with modern landscape architects.
