Brian Hoffert is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies and History at North Central College. He coordinates the History of Ideas and East Asian Studies programs.

His research focuses on East Asian intellectual traditions, particularly early Chinese philosophy, Daoism, Neo-Confucianism, and Japanese religion. He has conducted extensive studies on Zhu Xi, Wang Yangming, and contemporary religious practices in Japan.
Teaching a range of courses including East Asian Thought (REL 315), Traditional/Modern China (HST 261/265), and the interdisciplinary History of Ideas program, Hoffert integrates philosophical and historical perspectives in his pedagogy.
He completed his Ph.D. dissertation on the historical evolution of the Zhuangzi under the guidance of scholars Tu Wei-ming, Michael Puett, and Harold Roth.
