Xile Hu is a Full Professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), leading the Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Catalysis (LSCI). His primary affiliation is within the School of Basic Sciences (SB), Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. He holds additional teaching roles in SCGC and EDCH programs, and serves on the SB Academic Evaluation Committee.
- Research focuses on catalysis, sustainable chemistry, energy storage, and materials science, particularly in CO2 electroreduction, hydrogen evolution, and anion exchange membranes.
- Education includes a BSc from Peking University (1996-2000), PhD from UC San Diego (2004), and postdoc at Caltech (2007).
His research interests span developing novel catalysts for energy sustainability, including non-precious metal electrocatalysts and bio-inspired materials. Recent work emphasizes CO2 conversion, green hydrogen production, and advanced polymer membranes for fuel cells and electrolyzers.
Cited articles highlight advancements in electrocatalytic systems, with a focus on optimizing reaction mechanisms and material stability under industrial conditions. Awards include the IUPAC Green Chemistry Award (2023) and Robert K. Grasselli Catalysis Award (2023).
He advises numerous PhD students and oversees grant-funded projects, contributing to international collaborations in sustainable energy technologies. The LSCI lab actively explores interdisciplinary approaches to address global energy challenges.
