Professor Xichun Luo is a faculty member in the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management at the University of Strathclyde. He serves as Director of Research and Technical Director of the Centre for Precision Manufacturing (CPM).
- Ultra Precision Manufacturing
- Nanomanufacturing
- Smart Manufacturing Systems
His research focuses on atomic-level machining mechanisms for semiconductor materials (Si, SiC, GaAs), ion-induced damage of diamond, and ultra-precision freeform machining technologies. His team pioneered a 6-axis hybrid micromachine and a digital twin-driven smart micromanufacturing system.
Recent research trends include:
- Sub-nanometer nanostructure fabrication via pulse modulation
- Explainable AI integration in manufacturing
- Smart surgical tools with digital twin assistance
Scientific recognitions:
- Ludwig Mond Prize (IMechE, 2015)
- Best Editor Awards (2021)
He supervises 5 Research Associates and 8 PhD students with £4.4m in active grants, including EPSRC-funded projects on sustainable circular manufacturing and real-time surgical digital twins.
