Xiaopeng Bi serves as a Professor (Career Track) in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering department at Washington State University's Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, based at the WSU Everett campus. His academic focus integrates teaching excellence with research in engineering education and mechanical systems design.
His educational foundation includes a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2003), complemented by M.S. and B.S. degrees in Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (1997, 1994). Prior academic appointments include Visiting Professor at Tecnologico de Monterrey (2019), Engineering Faculty at Everett Community College (2009-2012), and Adjunct Professor at Saint Martin’s University (2010-2011).
Dr. Bi's research program centers on Engineering Education methodologies, Aerospace and Automotive Design innovation, and the Dynamic Failure and Fracture of Materials and Structures. His work in Sustainable Design aligns with the department's emphasis on environmentally conscious engineering solutions. This multidisciplinary approach bridges theoretical principles with practical applications in vehicle systems and material science.
His exceptional teaching impact is documented through prestigious recognitions:
- WSU President’s Distinguished Teaching Award (2017)
- WSU Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture Reid Miller Excellence in Teaching Award (2016)
Professional activities include curriculum development in engineering education and collaboration on design sustainability initiatives, with current work focusing on aircraft/vehicle engineering applications and material failure analysis.
