Xiaomei Cai is an Associate Professor of Communication at George Mason University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), where she has served since 2006. She holds a B.A. in English from Jilin University, M.A. in English Linguistics from Peking University, and M.A./Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Indiana University. Her research focuses on children and media, particularly children’s online privacy and 'sharenting' behaviors, alongside adolescent health prevention. She directs CHSS's Faculty Engagement and Belonging initiatives and leads AAPI and Global Employee of Mason (GEM) affinity groups. Dr. Cai teaches courses like COMM 400 (Research Methods), COMM 367 (Children and Media), and COMM 775 (Media Content Analysis).
Her work explores health communication strategies, including anti-smoking interventions for immigrant populations and youth vaping prevention. She collaborates with community organizations to promote AAPI history in K-12 education and advises on inclusive excellence at George Mason. Key research contributions address digital privacy ethics, vaccine communication during pandemics, and culturally tailored health messaging.
