Xiaoling Shu is a Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Davis. Her research focuses on marketization, globalization, gender inequalities, and data science methodologies. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Shu has served as director of East Asian Studies at UC Davis (2017-22), chair of the American Sociological Association's Section on Asia and Asian America (2018-21), and president of the International Chinese Sociological Association (2016-17).
Her expertise includes knowledge discovery, data mining, and advanced quantitative methods. She is affiliated with multiple institutes, including Computational Social Science, Communication, and the Global Tea Institute. Notable awards include a MacArthur Fellowship (1991-95) and multiple Faculty Career Development Awards.
