Xiaogang Hu serves as Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Kinesiology, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at The Pennsylvania State University, holding the Dorothy Foehr Huck and J. Lloyd Huck Chair in Neurorehabilitation. He maintains dual affiliations with the Huck Institutes of Life Sciences and the Center for Neural Engineering within the College of Health and Human Development, where his primary academic appointment resides in the Department of Kinesiology.
Dr. Hu's research centers on neural control mechanisms of biological and bionic hands, with emphasis on developing neural-machine interfaces and targeted stimulation techniques to restore sensory-motor function following neurological trauma. His work specifically addresses rehabilitation challenges in stroke survivors, traumatic brain injury patients, and limb loss cases through innovative neuroengineering approaches. A significant focus involves creating home-based health monitoring systems for continuous motor impairment assessment and remote neural rehabilitation delivery.
Leading the Neuromechanics Laboratory, Dr. Hu secures research funding for neural rehabilitation initiatives spanning neuroprosthetics, neural stimulation protocols, and tele-rehabilitation technologies. His interdisciplinary work bridges engineering principles with clinical rehabilitation science to develop practical solutions for neurologically impaired populations.
