Xiaodu Wang

Xiaodu Wang, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Margie and Bill Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design at The University of Texas at San Antonio, specializing in Mechanical Engineering. He leads the Mechanics of Biological Materials/Structures (MBMS) Lab, focusing on the structural-mechanical behavior of biological materials, particularly bone, at multiple length scales.

His research explores relationships between bone composition, microarchitecture, and mechanical properties, emphasizing roles of collagen cross-links, glycosaminoglycans, and water retention in bone toughness. He employs computational modeling, finite element analysis, and advanced imaging techniques (e.g., synchrotron X-ray, Raman spectroscopy, DXA).

Recent publications highlight his work on deep learning applications for predicting bone stiffness, probabilistic modeling of trabecular architecture, and ultrastructural analysis of bone fragility mechanisms. Collaborative studies link bone composition to diseases like osteoporosis and osteogenesis imperfecta.
