Xiao Fan, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida. She holds affiliations within the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and leads the Fan Lab focused on computational genetics and precision medicine. Her research integrates machine learning with genomic data to study rare diseases and genetic variant interpretation.
- Education: Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, University of Alberta (2016)
Research interests include genetic architecture of rare diseases, computational methods for variant interpretation, and machine learning applications in medical biochemistry. Her work emphasizes case-control association studies, pathogenic variant identification, and predictive modeling of phenotypic trajectories using multi-omics data.
Dr. Fan has published 24 peer-reviewed articles and secured significant funding including the NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award (2021-2026). Her recent work highlights advancements in DNA damage response mechanisms and CRISPR-based screening techniques. Awards include the Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize (2015) and Alberta Innovates Scholarship (2014-2015).
Her lab collaborates across disciplines to advance translational research in genetic medicine, with ongoing projects in rare disease gene discovery and precision diagnostics.
