Xian Gu is Professor of Finance and Co-Director of the Centre for Banking, Institutions, and Development (CBID) at Durham University Business School. She previously held positions at Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing and was a visiting lecturer at the Wharton School. Her research examines financial intermediation, corporate finance, FinTech, and law and finance.
Dr. Gu's work explores critical aspects of modern financial systems including shadow banking mechanisms, corporate reputation in debt markets, political connections in global financing, and the structural transformation driven by financial technologies. She has published extensively in top finance journals including Journal of Financial Economics and Journal of International Economics.
Her research portfolio demonstrates strong expertise in China's financial system evolution, comparative banking structures, and the regulatory implications of emerging financial technologies. Recent work focuses on implicit guarantees in shadow banking, institutional influences on corporate reputation, and the impact of political ties on global capital raising.
Dr. Gu serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Financial Stability and supervises doctoral research in finance. She contributes to academic leadership through her co-directorship of CBID, which promotes research on banking systems and economic development.
