Xelo Sanmateu is the Spanish Language Co-ordinator and Year Abroad Co-Ordinator at Queen Mary University of London's Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, affiliated with the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film. She holds a Licenciatura en Filología from Universitat de València and an MA in Medieval Studies from Queen Mary. With over 30 years of teaching experience, she specializes in Spanish language instruction, oral competence, and translation theory. Her research focuses on medieval subjects in cinema, particularly Spanish and Latin American films.
She has contributed to academic initiatives such as the Spanish and Latin American Film Seminar and the Medieval Spanish Research Seminar, serving as chair of the Departmental Research Seminar. She collaborates with the Centre for Catalan Studies and has edited multiple scholarly works on medievalism in film and Hispanic studies.
Her publications analyze cinematic adaptations of medieval literature and historical figures, including Isabella I of Castile and Arthurian legends. Her work bridges medieval scholarship with modern cultural representation, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to film studies.
