Xavier Ribas is an Associate Lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and a leading researcher in photographic documentation of contested spaces and environmental histories. He holds a BA in Social Anthropology from the University of Barcelona (1990) and an MA in Documentary Photography from Newport School of Art and Design (1993). His work bridges anthropology, geography, and art, focusing on themes like colonial legacies, resource extraction, and urban development.
As Principal Investigator of the AHRC-funded Traces of Nitrate project, he explores Chile’s nitrate and copper mining histories, tracing their global impacts from the Atacama Desert to London’s estates. This project has received three AHRC grants (2012-2024) and collaborations across Spain, the UK, and Chile. His exhibitions and publications have been featured in major institutions including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Stedelijk Museum.
Ribas’ research also involves interdisciplinary collaborations, such as with the Universidad de Salamanca and Universitat Politècnica de València. His work is represented in collections like the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona and the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain. Recent projects include Andean Glaciers and Climate Justice, examining environmental histories through photography.
