Xóchitl Bada is an Associate Professor in the Department of Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her research focuses on transnational migration dynamics, labor rights, and civic engagement of migrant communities in North America. She examines how migrant organizations, such as hometown associations, influence policy and community development across borders. Her work spans interdisciplinary perspectives, combining sociology, political science, and migration studies to analyze contemporary issues like migrant worker rights, transnational networks, and urban immigrant activism.
Key research interests include the role of migrant organizations in shaping binational policies, the impact of migration on rural communities, and the intersection of labor rights with immigration debates. She has extensively studied Chicago’s Mexican migrant communities, documenting their transnational civic practices and advocacy strategies. Her publications explore themes such as collective remittances, transnational governance frameworks, and the evolving nature of migrant political participation.
Bada’s scholarly contributions highlight the complexities of migration in contexts like Michoacán, Mexico, and the transformative potential of migrant-led initiatives. She has co-edited major works like the Routledge International Handbook of Transnational Studies and authored influential analyses of North American labor cooperation agreements. Her work underscores the need for multiscalar solutions to address migrant worker exploitation and advocate for equitable policies.
