معرفی
Wynand Roos is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Warren Albert Medical School, Brown University, since 2024. His career spans 21 years at the Institute of Toxicology, Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz, Germany, where he investigated DNA damage from alkylating agents and cancer therapies.
- PhD, University of Stellenbosch (2001)
- BSc, University of Stellenbosch (1997)
Roos’s research focuses on environmental genotoxicity, therapeutic-induced DNA lesions, and cellular repair mechanisms. He explores how DNA damage triggers apoptosis, autophagy, and senescence in gliomas and melanomas, with expertise in base excision repair, translesion synthesis, and epigenetic modulators like HDAC inhibitors.
His recent publications (2023–2025) highlight trends in DNA repair pathways, PARP/PARG inhibition, plant-based chemotherapeutics, and epigenetic strategies in oncology. Collaborations include Robert Sobol at Brown, focusing on DNA polymerase beta and repair dynamics.
- 2013 Gesellschaft für Biologische Strahlenforschung Poster Award
- 2008 Mutagenesis/Oxford University Press Poster Award
- 2006 Deutsche Gesellschaft für DNA-Reparaturforschung Poster Award
- 2000 Struwig-Germeshuysen Cancer Research Bursary
- 2000 SAAPMB Incentive Award for Most Promising Young Scientist
- 1999 Struwig-Germeshuysen Bursary of Merit
- 1996 Stellenbosch 2000 Bursary of Merit
Roos has led university and DFG-funded projects, mentoring research teams and defining protocols in DNA repair. His work bridges molecular toxicology and clinical applications, with ongoing studies at Brown’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
