Wuqiang Zhu is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Consultant in the Departments of Cardiovascular Diseases and Physiology & Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic. His research focuses on cardiac regeneration, cardiomyocyte proliferation mechanisms, and developing cell therapies for heart failure. He holds editorial roles at PLOS One and Frontiers journals and has received awards including the Melvin L. Marcus Young Investigator Award (2017 finalist) and the Caroline tum Suden/Frances Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Award (2013).
- Education: MD from Wuhan University School of Medicine, PhD in Cellular and Integrative Physiology (Indiana University), and postdoctoral training at Northwestern University.
Research interests include understanding heart failure pathophysiology, engineering cardiac tissues using human induced pluripotent stem cells, and mitigating cardiotoxicity from cancer treatments. His work combines in vitro/in vivo models with clinical biopsy analyses to develop novel regenerative therapies.
Recent publications emphasize nanoparticle drug delivery systems, apelin-based therapies for myocardial recovery, and cyclin D2-mediated stem cell efficacy improvements in swine models.
