Woody Holton is the Peter and Bonnie McCausland Professor of History at the University of South Carolina, part of the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences. He specializes in Early American history, focusing on the American Revolution, economic history, and the experiences of African Americans, Native Americans, and women. Holton holds a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in History from Duke University. His research explores themes such as revolutionary economic dynamics, gender roles, and indigenous resistance.
His notable works include Abigail Adams (2009), winner of the Bancroft Prize, and Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution (2007), a National Book Award finalist. Holton has held prestigious fellowships, including a Guggenheim (2008–2009) and a National Endowment for the Humanities grant (2012–2013). His current projects include a book on the integrated history of the American Revolution and comparative analyses of Atlantic slave revolts.
Research Interests: Holton’s work integrates economic, social, and political history. He examines how class, race, and gender intersected in shaping revolutionary outcomes. Recent projects include linking constitutional changes to married women’s property rights and analyzing debtors’ vulnerabilities post-1788. His scholarship challenges traditional narratives by centering marginalized voices and economic realities.
Awards and Grants: Holton’s accolades include the Organization of American Historians’ Merle Curti Award (1999), the Virginia Literary Award (2009), and fellowships from the Newberry Library and Massachusetts Historical Society. His articles span journals like the Journal of Southern History and William and Mary Quarterly, addressing topics from slave rebellions to constitutional debates.
Teaching and Mentorship: Holton teaches graduate seminars on Colonial America and undergraduate courses on early African Americans, women’s history, and the American Revolution. He has advised numerous students and served as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians since 2006.
