Dr. Wonyong Park is an Associate Professor of Science Education at the University of Southampton's Southampton Education School. His work focuses on the role of science and STEM education in fostering disaster-resilient societies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches involving history, citizenship, and religious education. He leads research projects funded by the ESRC, UNESCO, and NSF, including studies on disaster education curricula and STEM policy reviews. Park actively engages with global academic communities through conferences, guest lectures, and editorial roles for journals like Science & Education and Journal of Research in Science Teaching. He also serves as ESERA Strand 6 Co-Chair and chairs research ethics committees. His awards include the Early Career Researcher Award (2023) and multiple Reviewer of Excellence recognitions.
Education: BSc/MSc in Physics Education (Seoul National University), DPhil in Science Education (University of Oxford). Prior to academia, he taught secondary science in South Korea and contributed to the Oxford Argumentation in Science and Religion Project. Current teaching includes modules in contemporary education, curriculum design, and research ethics for BSc/MSc/PhD programs.
Research Interests: Disaster education, STEM policy, interdisciplinary curriculum development, nature of science (NOS) education, teacher professional development. His work bridges theoretical research with practical applications, such as community-based projects with Grenfell Tower fire survivors and collaborative curriculum units on the Titanic disaster.
Key Projects (2022–2025): ESRC-funded disaster education study; UNESCO review of Southeast European STEM policies; NSF-funded Buffalo Blizzard curriculum framework (Co-PI); community-participatory Grenfell curriculum development. His publications explore disaster justice, climate literacy, and historical case studies in science education.
