Wolfgang Nejdl

Wolfgang Nejdl is a Professor of Computer Science at Leibniz Universität Hannover since 1995, heading the L3S Research Center and Data Science Institute / Knowledge Based Systems. His academic journey includes assistant professorship at Technical University of Vienna (1988-1992), associate professorship at RWTH Aachen (1992-1995), and visiting positions at Xerox PARC, Stanford University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, EPFL Lausanne, PUC Rio, Trento, and Politecnico di Milano.

He earned his M.Sc. (1984) and Ph.D. (1988) from the Technical University of Vienna. His research spans Information Retrieval, Web Science, Artificial Intelligence, Social and Semantic Web, Digital Libraries, and Technology Enhanced Learning, with foundational work on temporal retrieval in Web archives through the ERC Advanced Grant ALEXANDRIA (2014-2019).

With over 420 publications and a Google Scholar h-index of 78, his work demonstrates consistent impact in Web Science and AI. Current projects include NoBIAS, SoBigData++, the International Leibniz Future Lab on Artificial Intelligence (focusing on personalized medicine), and DAISEC—a European Digital Innovation Hub advancing AI and Cybersecurity in production, mobility, and skilled crafts.

As principal investigator of major EU-funded initiatives, he drives translational research connecting theoretical foundations with societal applications. His leadership at L3S and the Data Science Institute fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across computer science, medicine, and industrial domains, mentoring next-generation researchers through structured PhD programs and international partnerships.
