Wolfgang M. Heckl is Professor and holder of the Oskar von Miller Chair of Science Communication at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), jointly affiliated with the School of Education and the Physics Department. He served as Director General of the Deutsches Museum from 2004 to 2025. As an experimental physicist trained under Nobel laureates Gerd Binnig (nanoscience) and Theodor Hänsch (quantum optics), he bridges fundamental research and public engagement.
Education:
- Diploma in Physics, Technical University of Munich (1978–1985)
- Dr. rer. nat., Technical University of Munich (1988)
- Habilitation in Experimental Physics, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (1993)
Research Focus: Heckl pioneers interdisciplinary work in nanoscience (molecular self-assembly, surface physics, scanning tunneling microscopy) and science communication (public engagement strategies, humor in science, and repair culture). His publications explore nanomaterial synthesis, origins of life, and innovative science outreach methodologies.
Publications: His 350+ works span nanoscale physics to science communication theory, with recent articles emphasizing on-surface polymerization, supramolecular chemistry, and critical analyses of science-society interfaces. Trends show consistent integration of experimental physics with societal applications.
Awards & Honors:
- Arthur-Burkhardt Prize for Science Communication (2021)
- Goldene Hermann-Oberth-Medaille (2017)
- Ehrenring der Eduard-Rhein-Stiftung (2015)
- European Academy of Sciences membership (2011)
- Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande (2008)
- Descartes Prize for Science Communication (2004)
- Communicator-Preis der DFG (2002)
- Philip Morris Forschungspreis (1993)
Grants & Leadership: Secured €85M in donations and €16.6M in third-party funding for the Deutsches Museum (2004–2021). Principal investigator for major initiatives including: MCQST (quantum science outreach), Geriatronics (assistive robotics), and DFG projects on origins of life. Leads committees for the European Science Foundation, Max Planck Institutes for Quantum Optics and Light Physics, and acatech's Science Communication Network.
