Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Liebl is a Full Professor of Microbiology at the Technische Universität München (TUM) since 2008, leading the Department of Microbiology. He specializes in applied microbiology, focusing on extremophiles, enzymatic degradation of polysaccharides, and genome/metagenome analysis. His career includes roles as Dean and Vice Dean at the University of Göttingen and significant contributions to microbial physiology and biotechnology.
Education & Career: Studied Biology at TUM (1979–1984), earned a PhD in Microbiology (1986), and habilitation (1997). He held professorships at the University of Göttingen (1997–2008) and declined an offer from Graz University of Technology. His research spans extremophilic bacteria, solventogenic clostridia, and microbial consortia in biogas environments.
Research Focus: Investigates extremophilic microorganisms (e.g., thermoacidophiles), polysaccharide degradation mechanisms, and biotechnological applications. Key areas include genome analysis, enzyme engineering, and microbial community dynamics in complex environments.
Labs & Teams: Oversees research groups like the Ehrenreich Lab, Baudrexl Lab, and Ehrmann Lab, focusing on topics such as Bacillus licheniformis, solventogenic clostridia, and food microbiology. Collaborates on projects involving biofuel production, enzyme discovery, and metagenomics.
