Professor Alexander Yakunin is a faculty member at Bangor University's School of Environmental and Natural Sciences, specializing in enzyme discovery, enzymology, and biocatalysis applications. He holds a PhD in Microbiology from the Winogradsky Institute of Microbiology (1987) and an MSc in Molecular Biology from Moscow State University (1978). His research focuses on extremophilic enzymes, bioremediation of plastics/microplastics, and CRISPR-associated enzymes. Key projects include enzyme applications in biocatalysis and scaling-up engineering biology for environmental solutions.
Research interests include enzyme stability under extreme conditions, lignin degradation, and microbial detoxification of fluorinated compounds. His work aligns with UN SDG goals for sustainable development and environmental protection. Recent projects include a £42k grant for microbial bioaugmentation in anaerobic digestion and collaborations on synthetic biology pathways for biofuel production.
Publications highlight enzyme engineering, CRISPR-Cas systems, and applications in plastic recycling. His lab explores novel enzymes from metagenomic libraries and archaeal extremophiles, contributing to industrial biotechnology and environmental sustainability.
