Wojciech Bałus is a Full Professor in the Department of Art History at Jagiellonian University in Kraków since 2003. He has held visiting positions at institutions including Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (Munich, 2021), Johann Gutenberg Universität (Mainz, 2006), and the University of Kiel (1997).
- Education: MA (1985), PhD (1990), and Habilitation (1997) in Art History from Jagiellonian University
- Academic leadership: Director of Department of Art History (2002-2008), President of Polish National Committee of Corpus Vitrearum (2005), Member of Polish Accreditation Committee (2008-2016)
His research focuses on modern art and architecture history, art theory, and stained-glass studies, with methodological foundations in Bildwissenschaft. His work bridges art history with intellectual history through studies like Jan Sas Zubrzycki's art theory.
Key contributions include directing the multi-institutional project "Beta maṣāḥǝft: Die Schriftkultur des christlichen Äthiopiens und Eritreas" (2016-2040) and serving as Co-Spokesperson for the Cluster of Excellence "Understanding Written Artefacts" (2019-2023).
