Professor Winston Morgan is a Professor of Toxicology, Equity & Inclusive Practice at the University of East London (UEL), affiliated with the Department of Bioscience in the School of Health Sport and Bioscience. His academic journey began with a BSc in Applied Biology (specializing in Pharmacology/Toxicology) and a PhD in Biochemical Toxicology from the London School of Pharmacy (now UCL School of Pharmacy). He has held roles including postdoctoral research fellow and lecturer at UEL since 1993, later becoming a programme leader for multiple MSc bioscience programmes.
His dual research focus spans toxicology (e.g., liver/kidney toxicity, drug mechanisms, e-cigarette toxicity) and equity in education/healthcare (BAME student outcomes, race-based medical disparities). Notable contributions include studying probiotics’ effects on gut health, Nigerian plant wound-healing properties, and HIV drug long-term toxicity. He has supervised over 10 PhD students, with recent work on paracetamol/NSAID mechanisms and racial disparities in vaccine uptake.
Morgan frequently engages in media commentary on BAME health disparities (e.g., BBC, The Guardian) and co-authored The Conversation articles on hand sanitizers’ antimicrobial resistance risks and pediatric cough syrup contamination. His teaching spans pharmacology, biomedical sciences, and toxicology modules at undergraduate/postgraduate levels.
Awards: None explicitly listed, but recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Biology and member of the British Toxicology Society.
Labs/Teams: Director of the Medicines Research Group and part of the Impact and Innovation unit at UEL.
