Prof. dr. ir. Wim Deferme is a Full Professor at Hasselt University's Faculty of Engineering Technology, leading the Engineering Materials and Applications research group. He holds roles such as Director of the Doctoral School Sciences and Technology and oversees a team of researchers and students focused on functional materials for flexible/stretchable electronics, printed sensors, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). His work emphasizes scalable printing/coating techniques like ultrasonic spray coating and inkjet printing, applied to non-rigid substrates such as textiles and 3D structures.
Deferme earned an engineering degree in Applied Physics from the Technical University of Eindhoven (2003) and a Ph.D. in Materials Physics from Hasselt University (2009). He has supervised over 20 PhD students, with active projects on topics like stretchable electronics, solar mini-grids in Tanzania, and smart wound monitoring systems. His research spans 63 projects funded by diverse initiatives, addressing challenges in sustainable energy, healthcare sensors, and advanced manufacturing.
Key contributions include innovations in liquid metal-based electronics, perovskite solar cells via ultrasonic coating, and biocompatible smart wearables. He teaches courses such as 'Physical Transport Phenomena' and 'Nano-electronics,' integrating practical skills with theoretical knowledge. His lab, part of the Institute for Materials Research, collaborates on global initiatives like the 'WISE WOUNDS' project for smart wound dressings and 'Solar Cookers for All' in Lubumbashi, DR Congo.
