William van Wijngaarden

William van Wijngaarden is a Full Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University’s Faculty of Science. His research lab is located in Office 247 of the Petrie Science & Engineering Building, and he can be reached at (416) 736-2100 ext. 77750. He is eligible to supervise graduate students in the Physics and Astronomy Graduate Program.

His research focuses on experimental atomic, molecular, and optical physics. Key areas include high-precision laser spectroscopy, laser cooling/atom trapping, ultracold atoms, Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), quantum information systems, and optical lattice studies. His group pioneered techniques using acousto/electro-optic modulators for precision measurements in quantum electrodynamics. Notably, they created Canada’s first Bose-Einstein condensate and are advancing optical lattice experiments to explore phase transitions like superfluid-Mott insulator states. Parallel work in climate science involves analyzing historical airport data to study environmental pollutants and climate change mechanisms.
