William Williams is the Audrey A. and John L. Dusseau Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Fine Arts at Haverford College since 1978. He has also served as Curator of Photography at the institution since 1981. His photographic works explore the intersection of terrain, architecture, and historical narratives, as seen in exhibitions at institutions like the Esther Klein Gallery, Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial, Smith College, and the Metropolitan Museum.

Williams' research focuses on using photography to interrogate historical memory, particularly in American and African American Civil War contexts, Underground Railroad sites, and architectural landscapes. His works are held in permanent collections including the National Gallery of Art and Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Scientific awards include prestigious fellowships and grants from the Ford Foundation, Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Pew Fellowships in the Arts, and state arts councils. He has also received multiple faculty research grants from Haverford College.
