William Summer Johnson (1913–1995) was the Jackson-Wood Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University, serving as Executive Head of the Department of Chemistry from 1960 to 1969. He held a PhD from Harvard University (1940) and undergraduate degrees from Amherst College (BA, 1936) and Harvard (AM). His work revolutionized organic synthesis, particularly in steroid chemistry and biomimetic polyene cyclization.
- Awarded the National Medal of Science (1987) and the Tetrahedron Prize (1991)
- Member of the National Academy of Sciences (1954) and American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- Recipient of multiple ACS awards and honorary doctorates
Research interests centered on synthetic organic chemistry, steroid total synthesis, and asymmetric induction in polyene cyclization. His methodologies, including cation-stabilizing auxiliaries and fluorine-assisted cyclizations, became foundational in organic synthesis. Advised over 20 notable chemists who became leaders in academia and industry.
Established the Johnson Symposium at Stanford, a premier event for organic chemists. Beyond academia, he was an avid jazz musician and electronics enthusiast.
