معرفی
Fred Koenig (1902–1974) was a Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University, serving for 37 years until his emeritus status in 1968. He held a PhD from the University of Munich (1929) and an AB from Harvard University. His research focused on thermodynamics, producing seminal work on electrocapillary curves and Gibbs' equilibrium principles. Beyond academia, he was an avid traveler and scholar of art, architecture, and science history.
- Affiliations: Stanford Chemistry Department, School of Humanities and Sciences
- Education: PhD in Electrochemistry (University of Munich, 1929); AB (Harvard University)
His academic contributions included defining foundational concepts in chemical thermodynamics, particularly the 'components' framework for phase rule analysis. Post-retirement, he taught a yearlong course on science history, reflecting his lifelong passion for interdisciplinary knowledge.
- Awards: Two Guggenheim Fellowships
Colleagues revered his clarity in teaching, rigorous scholarship, and witty historical anecdotes. He balanced scientific rigor with a love for the arts, climbing the Matterhorn and exploring Incan/Mayan ruins. His legacy includes improved freshman chemistry curricula and mentorship of peers.
