Professor William Sievert holds an Adjunct Professorship at Monash University and is affiliated with Monash Health, where he serves as Director of the Gastrointestinal and Liver Unit. His dual appointments emphasize his role as a clinician-scientist bridging academic and clinical practice.
Research Interests: Sievert's work focuses on liver diseases, particularly hepatitis B/C, antiviral therapies, inflammatory mechanisms, and translational research in hepatic fibrosis. He leads clinical trials for new antivirals and directs a basic research lab investigating fibrogenesis. His lab also explores amniotic epithelial cells as potential antifibrotic therapies.
Recent Articles: His 2024 studies highlight predictive biomarkers for hepatitis flares post-therapy, safety of cell-based treatments for cirrhosis, and RNAi therapy efficacy in hepatitis B. Ongoing projects include trials for hepatocellular carcinoma adjuvant therapy and fistulizing Crohn's disease interventions.
Grants & Collaborations: Sievert leads or co-leads projects funded by NHMRC and industry partnerships, including studies on JAK-STAT pathways in gastrointestinal cancers and follistatin's role in fibrosis resolution. He is a chief investigator in multiple international clinical trials.
Education: He contributes to medical curriculum development at Monash, integrating translational research with clinical education. His work aligns with UN SDG 3 (Good Health) through global hepatitis and liver disease initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Clinical Research Unit (since 2009) and the Monash Breath Laboratory, fostering interdisciplinary research in liver and gastrointestinal diseases.
