William San Martín is an Assistant Professor of Global Environmental Science, Technology, and Governance at Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Department of Integrative and Global Studies. He holds affiliations with the Climate Social Science Network (CSSN) at Brown University and the Earth Systems Governance Project at Utrecht University. His interdisciplinary research bridges environmental history, science and technology studies (STS), and policy analysis, with a focus on nitrogen governance, environmental justice, and sustainable development in the Global South.
San Martín earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, a postdoctorate at MIT, and degrees from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He has held fellowships at MIT's STS Program, the Rachel Carson Center, and the Earth Systems Governance Project. His work integrates biophysical scientists, policymakers, and international institutions to address nitrogen cycle challenges and climate resilience.
Key research contributions include co-editing the Routledge Handbook of Environmental History (2023) and contributing to the International Nitrogen Assessment (INA) (2024). He leads NSF-funded projects like the iN-Net initiative and co-produces knowledge on biological nitrogen fixation. His teaching spans global environmental governance, climate justice, and STS methodologies.
San Martín’s professional accolades include the EHCA Prize for interdisciplinary environmental history research (2019), Carson Fellow distinction (2021), and Fulbright Scholar recognition (2011–2015). He actively participates in policy forums, steering councils for the International Nitrogen Initiative, and academic networks like the American Society for Environmental History and the Society for Social Studies of Science.
