William Pettigrew is Professor of History at Lancaster University's School of Global Affairs, appointed in 2018. Previously, he held a permanent position at the University of Kent (2009-2018) and was a Junior Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He received education from Oxford and Yale universities.
His research examines Britain's global historical impact, specializing in:
- Transatlantic slave trade operations (company-managed and 'free trade')
- Constitutional foundations of British economic growth
- Evolution of English trading corporations
- International trade's role in shaping England's constitution
- 17th-18th century Global British history
Recent publications (2023) analyze global trade's influence on English liberty, economic thought evolution in trading nations, and slavery escape narratives. Works consistently engage with economic history, colonial systems, and African diaspora experiences.
He currently supervises PhD student Amy Stanning (Centre for War and Diplomacy) and leads the research project 'Legacies of the British Slave Trade: The Structures and Significance of British Investment in the Transatlantic Slave Trade, 1550-1807' (2021-2024).
