William P. King is a Professor and Ralph A. Andersen Endowed Chair at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with appointments in Mechanical Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. He is affiliated with the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. His research focuses on nanotechnology, advanced materials, thermal transport, and manufacturing innovations. King holds 23 U.S. patents and has co-founded companies like Fast Radius and Hoowaki LLC.
Education: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Stanford University, 2002), M.S. (Stanford, 1998), B.S. (University of Dayton, 1996). Academic roles include Professor at UIUC (2010–present), Associate Professor at Georgia Tech (2007–2010), and postdoctoral research at Stanford and IBM Zurich.
Research Interests span nanotechnology, thermal systems, additive manufacturing, and biomedical applications. His lab, the Nanoengineering Laboratory, develops translational technologies across science, commerce, and engineering. Key areas include phase-change materials for thermal management, microfluidic diagnostics, and advanced heat exchangers.
