William Nelson is an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Economist at the Bank Policy Institute. Previously, he held roles including Executive Managing Director, Chief Economist, and Head of Research at The Clearing House Association, and Chief Economist of the Clearing House Payments Company. His career spans over three decades, including significant tenure at the Federal Reserve Board, where he contributed to monetary policy analysis, discount window policy, and financial institution supervision.
He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and M.A. in Economics from Yale University, and a B.A. from the University of Virginia. His research focuses on monetary policy rules, financial stability, and the intersection of monetary policy with lender-of-last-resort frameworks. Notable works include analyses of quantitative easing, central bank digital currencies, and historical integration of capital/liquidity regulations.
Nelson’s professional contributions include membership in key committees like the Large Institution Supervision Coordinating Committee (LISCC) and the BIS working groups on liquidity regulations. He has also engaged in critical post-crisis research on central bank responses and forward guidance strategies.
