William Mitch is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. He holds a B.A. in Anthropology (Archaeology) from Harvard University (1993), M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UC Berkeley (1996, 2003). His research focuses on environmental organic chemistry, addressing water quality challenges related to public health, sustainability, and carbon sequestration.
Key research areas include disinfection byproduct formation in water systems, oceanic carbon dynamics, persistent pollutants, and wastewater recycling. His lab explores chemical pathways to minimize harmful byproducts, such as nitrosamines from amine-based carbon capture. He advises the Yale Student Chapter of Engineers Without Borders and has received prestigious awards like the AEESP Dissertation Award (2004) and NSF CAREER Award (2007).
Notable projects include evaluating advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for potable reuse and studying the toxicity of disinfection byproducts. His work bridges archaeology and environmental engineering, as seen in a 2023 publication on lithic importation patterns in Louisiana archaeology.
