Professor William McLean is Professor of Endodontology at the University of Glasgow Dental School and serves as the academic lead for Undergraduate Endodontics, programme co-ordinator for the MSc Endodontics, and lead for the Glasgow Endodontology Group. He is also Section Head for Biological and Medical Sciences within the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing. Professor McLean is Past President of the British Endodontic Society, was Conference Chair of the World Endodontic Congress 2024 held in Glasgow, and currently serves as European Regent for the International Federation of Endodontic Associations.
Professor McLean graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine Dental School in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Degree in Dental Science. Following graduation, he was awarded an Action Research Training Fellowship to pursue his PhD at Harvard Medical School Department of Cell Biology, where he investigated craniofacial and skeletal development. In 2002, he took up a position as a lecturer at Manchester University in the School of Biological Sciences. In 2004, he returned to clinical practice and subsequently undertook postgraduate training in Endodontology.
His research focuses on the immunopathobiology and microbiology of endodontic disease through the Glasgow Endodontology Group, a multidisciplinary team working toward developing novel strategies for clinical management. The group's overarching theme is 'Race for the Space' - examining the interaction between cells, surfaces and therapeutics in endodontic repair and regeneration. His work spans understanding endodontic biofilms, inter-kingdom relationships within them, and managing them to prepare for regeneration, as well as orchestrating stem cell behavior and organization in repair and regeneration. His publications consistently address biofilm formation, antimicrobial strategies, and regenerative approaches in endodontics.
- Action Research - Research Training Fellowship (1998-2001)

Professor McLean supervises numerous PhD and MSc students working on various aspects of endodontic research, including Suror Shaban, Othman Baradwan, and Andrew MacInnes (PhD candidates), and several MSc students. His research has been supported by grants from the British Endodontic Society, including 'Metagenomic analysis of endodontic large lesions for the development of targeted biofilm disruption strategies' (2024-2027) and 'Do interkingdom polymicrobial biofilms impede the treatment of apical periodontitis?' (2018-2020).
The Glasgow Endodontology Group consists of bioengineers, microbiologists, biologists and clinicians including Dr. Christopher Delaney, Dr. Andrew Hamilton, Dr. Ruchi Kumari, Dr. Chris Nile, and Professor Matthew Dalby. This collaborative team brings diverse expertise to tackle complex problems in endodontic disease pathogenesis and treatment development.
