William McCorkle is a Lecturer in Music at Washington and Lee University (W&L), specializing in organ performance and historical musicology. He holds degrees from Phillips Exeter Academy, Amherst College, and Yale University, where he studied under notable mentors like Charles Krigbaum and Albert Fuller. A seasoned performer, McCorkle focuses on 17th- and 18th-century French and Italian vocal and keyboard styles, with a particular emphasis on French organ music. He has performed extensively in the U.S. and Europe as an organist, harpsichordist, and pianist.
McCorkle has been a pivotal figure at Lexington Presbyterian Church since 1979, serving as organist and director of music. He played a key role in selecting the church’s C. B. Fisk pipe organ, which reflects his French musical training. His research and performance interests are deeply rooted in historical performance practices, informed by his studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, Annette Dieudonné, and William Christie as an Edward Poole Lay Fellow.
