William M. de Souza is an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky's College of Medicine, Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. His research focuses on virus-host interactions and transmission dynamics of arboviruses affecting human health, utilizing a transdisciplinary framework combining virology, immunology, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and computational methods.
- Education: PhD in Basic and Applied Immunology (Virology) from University of São Paulo
- Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Texas Medical Branch
The de Souza Laboratory generates translational knowledge to improve public health outcomes, particularly in populations affected by arboviruses. Current research priorities include anticipating arboviral outbreaks, developing mitigation strategies, and training future virology researchers. Key publications address chikungunya, Mayaro, and Oropouche virus epidemiology, SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics, and climate change impacts on vector-borne diseases.
Supported by collaborations with the Brazil-UK CADDE Genomic Network and institutions like University of São Paulo, University of Texas Medical Branch, and University of Kentucky, the lab employs advanced computational modeling and molecular techniques to analyze pathogen spread, viral evolution, and disease burden across the Americas.
