William Luhr is a Professor of English at Saint Peter's University, teaching courses including EL-293 Today's Film Scene, EL-335 Victorian Life and Literature, EL-331 English Romanticism, EL-123 Forms of Literature (Poetry and Drama), and EL-493 Film Noir from his office in Loyola Hall, Room 34. His educational background includes a Ph.D. and M.A. from New York University and a B.A. from Fordham University.
Dr. Luhr specializes in literary and cinema studies with emphasis on film adaptations of literary works. As a Standing Editor for Oxford University Press’ Bibliography for Cinema and Media Studies and co-author of the widely used textbook Thinking About Movies, he actively shapes film scholarship. His expertise makes him a sought-after speaker at international venues including the Pordenone Film Festival in Italy and CUNY-TV's City Cinematheque program.
His publications demonstrate consistent focus on film analysis, cinematic interpretation, and interdisciplinary approaches to media studies, with recent work including the 2018 textbook edition and upcoming projects with Wiley Blackwell.
Dr. Luhr co-chairs the Columbia University Faculty Seminar on Cinema and Interdisciplinary Interpretation, fostering academic dialogue at the intersection of film theory and literary criticism.
