William Lafi Youmans is an Associate Professor at George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs, specializing in transnationalism, power dynamics, and communication. His research focuses on global news, international broadcasting, Middle Eastern politics, and Arab-American studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Communications Studies (University of Michigan, 2012), a J.D. (UC Berkeley, 2003), and a B.A. in Political Science (University of Michigan, 2000).
Notable works include his book Unlikely Audience: Al Jazeera's Struggle in America (2017), which examines Qatar’s news network’s market challenges in the U.S. His award-winning research on CIA recruitment tactics in Arab Detroit (2013) highlights intersections of national security and community dynamics. He frequently contributes to major media outlets like the Washington Post and Nieman Journalism Lab, and has presented at leading conferences such as the International Communication Association and Middle East Studies Association.
His academic publications span topics including Al Jazeera’s strategic positioning, social media’s role in activism, and the political economy of international broadcasting. His work often critiques power structures in media and governance, emphasizing how communication shapes—and is shaped by—geopolitical realities.
Research awards include the 2013 Best Paper Award from the International Communication Section of the International Studies Association.
